Happy Jele reveals his retirement plan

Former Orlando Pirates captain Happy Jele has revealed his retirement plan while detailing his multiple meetings with club chairman Irvin Khoza which ultimately led to the defender leaving the club.

After weeks of discussion, Pirates and Jele, the oldest, parted ways, ending a 16-year relationship.

Jele’s talks with club chairman Irvin Khoza over a possible new Pirates deal have not borne fruit, and the 35-year-old, who still wants to play for another three seasons before quitting, has revealed what really happened in these meetings.

In his latest Soccer Laduma interview, taking readers through the conversation, Jele said, “I explained to the president that I believe I still have it in me to continue for a few more seasons and that if the position of no -game is still standing, so I will come back to the team. As I mentioned, the meetings got deeper and more personal each time we sat down, and I will always appreciate what the President has done for me.

“He is like a father to me, and I had to be honest with him as a son. I opened my heart to him over the past three weeks. He said heart-warming words to me and made it clear that he appreciates my contribution to the club. It was not a decision I could make in a few days. I also had to engage my family. I also had to think about what they were offering me and come back to them , but also hoping that they would see things from my perspective as well.

“There were disagreements, and sometimes we agreed on certain things. We really went back and forth until the last meeting, which was Monday July 18th. That’s when it all ended, and I had to close the door and move on. The rest is history.

Jele concluded: “I still want to play football, so I hope to play let’s say the next two years, or three if possible. It will be good for me. Only then can I hang up my boots.
