Council consults on new primary school plan

Cheshire East Council is looking to build another new primary school in the borough to ease pressure on local places and meet the needs of families moving into new homes.

A single-form first entry school is proposed for the Shavington/Basford area of Crewe, where 774 new homes are to be built to help meet growing housing demand in the area.

A four-week consultation has begun so that residents and all interested parties can comment on the proposal. Details are on the council’s website and the consultation will end on Sunday May 22. A walk-in public session will be held at Shavington Village Hall, Main Road, Shavington on Tuesday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The school would have an initial capacity of 210 pupils, but would be designed and built in such a way that it could be expanded to develop a two-classroom setting, accommodating up to 420 children, if required.

The school would be funded by contributions from developers of local housing schemes and a grant from the Department of Education (DfE). The DfE will be informed of all consultation comments as part of the process.Cllr Kathryn Flavell 250x350

Councilor Kathryn Flavell, chair of the council’s Children and Families Committee, said: ‘We have considered the current capacity of all primary schools within a two-mile radius and there is little scope for expansion in these schools.

“We considered a number of factors including a safe walking route, distance and site restrictions due to the size of nearby schools. If we don’t move forward with this new school there will be a lack of places from September 2025.

“Therefore, I urge all interested parties, including parents, ward and parish councilors and faith groups, to express their views on this occasion.”

The proposed new elementary school would require planning approval. If approved, the goal would be to complete construction in time for the fall term of September 2025.

The consultation will seek views and comments on school ethics, provisions for special educational needs and nurseries and any other aspect of the proposal.
